Howell Cobb papers, 1861-1868.

The collection consists of papers of Howell Cobb from 1861-1868. The papers include correspondence and telegrams to Cobb pertaining to the Civil War and administration of the Confederate government. The telegrams mainly contain brief notes on troop movements, battles or skirmishes, and casualties in Georgia particularly during the Atlanta Campaign. The correspondence discusses cotton production and trade for the Confederacy, conscriptions, black market trading by Georgia citizens, Reconstruction government, and the 1868 presidential election. The collection also contains letters (1865) between Howell Cobb Jr. and Mary McKinley before their marriage and a manuscript (1892) written by John O. Waddell detailing his experiences at Crampton's Gap (Md.) during the Civil War.

He served as congressman (1843-51; 1855-57), Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives (1849-51), governor of Georgia (1851-53), and secretary of the treasury (1857-60).
